Tips for coming up with your own hashtags

Now that you’ve had a quick look at some great examples of getting creative with hashtags, the question stands… how do you get your own funny hashtag?

Let’s have a look at some basic tips and tricks to get you started!

1. Start with your names

Write down your first and last names. A great way to do this is to write them on flashcards (or cut them out).

Why?

Because being able to move the names around can often be the key to great inspiration!

Sometimes this alone will be all you need for a great idea to jump out at you. If not, try the next four tips…

2. Try alliteration

Alliteration is when 2 or more words start with the same sound (‘same sound’ is an example of alliteration).

So if one of the last names is Ferguson (to take a random example), you could use #FergusonFinals or #FinallyFerguson.

If your last name is De La Cruz, you could go with #ACoupleOfCruz.

You get the picture, right?

3. Look for puns

Another great idea is to use puns. Taking the last example of De La Cruz, you could make your hashtag #JustCruzing.

Another fun example: the Nguyens could have #NguyenTown (a really bad – and therefore funny – pun on ‘new in town’), the Taylors could have #TaylorOfTwoCities.

Which leads nicely into the next idea…

4. Reference sayings or quotes

#TaylorOfTwoCities is, of course, a reference to Tale Of Two Cities. Using popular sayings, quotes, or film or book references is another great way to stand out – and standing out makes it easier for your guests to remember (and therefore use) your hashtag!

Here are some other examples I’ve just made up on the spot:

#Don’tGoBreakingMyHart

#GiveThemHelen

#NeverLetMeGoh

5. Use nicknames

One really great way to personalise your hashtags is to use nicknames. If your friends (or you) have ever used a mash up of your names (like how Sheldon and Amy get dubbed Shamy’ in Big Bang Theory), then it’s time to really own it!

The easy thing about this is, you can use it and just add the year or some simple phrase, and it still counts as funny because of the nickname… easy, right?

For the Shamy, for example, you could go with #ShamyGetMarried, #TheWeddingOfShamy, or just #Shamy2022.

6. Don’t use words that can be misspelled

Sounds obvious, but easily forgot in the heat of humour (yeah, that’s a thing, I didn’t just make it up).

Here’s a great scene from one of my favourite movies to show the importance of keeping your spelling simple!

The point is, if people misspell your hashtag, you’re almost guaranteed to miss some of the photos. And that’s no fun. So keep it simple!

7. #UpperCaseTheStartOfEachWord

You’ve probably notice me doing this, and there’s a reason I do it. Capitalising Each Word Makes It Easier For Anyone Reading It.

Remember you want your guests to use the hashtag with their photos, right? So writing it this way means when they see it on the welcome board, or in the place card, or wherever else it is, they read it faster. And that means they remember it better.

And they can only use it if they remember it!

8. Always check it’s available!!

Oh, and never forget – make sure nobody else has used it! You don’t want your pictures getting caught up in other people’s weddings, so always take a few minutes to check out whatever social media you use.

3 Fill-in-the-blanks wedding hashtags

If you’re really stuck, try using some of these fill-in-the-blanks templates. But a word of warning: you may need to add the year or some other number to make it unique, and it’s hard to be funny without a bespoke hashtag.

But hey, it’s easier, and weddings are enough stress already, right?

Just fill in the blank with your name(s)!

#TheOneWithThe____S (e.g. #TheOneWithTheTaylors)

#____FeelingAllWhite

#Operation______

Hire a professional to do it for you

If you really don’t have the time… or you’re struggling with inspiration… but you still want a great and funny wedding hashtag for your big day, there’s still hope. You can always hire someone else to do it for you, and get a selection of funny or cute hashtags made just for you.

This isn’t for everyone, but if you’re looking for something unique and you can’t do it yourself, it might be the right option for you!

How to use your hashtag!

Once you’ve got your hashtag – however you got it – don’t forget to use it! Most people think of using it on the welcome board, but the possibilities are much wider. Here are some great places to put your wedding hashtag:

• On the wedding invitation

• In all social media posts you make about your wedding

• The welcome board

• Eating cards

• On the menu

• On each table

• Hang it in paper the photobooth, if you have one (or some other spot people look at frequently)

• In the message book

You can even create a special photo corner with the hastag placed somewhere easily seen in the area.

It’s up to you, get creative!

And now it’s time to go make your own funny wedding hashtag – and if you want me to add it into this article as an example, send it my way once you’ve chosen!
